301 Full Hard Stainless Steel Shim Stock

301 Full Hard Shim Stock is an austenitic stainless steel with a composition of 17% chromium and 7% nickel. Its combination of hardness and toughness, resistance to atmosphere corrosion and its bright surface finish make it an excellent choice for anything from aerospace applications to decorative structural components. 301 Full Hard Stainless Steel is resistant to fatigue and a variety of corrosive media. However, the corrosion properties are not as good as 302/304 (18-8 chromium-nickel) stainless steel. Its susceptibility to carbide precipitation during welding restricts its use in some applications.

Introduction to 301 Full Hard Stainless Shims

301 full hard sheet is an austenitic stainless steel alloy produced in a full-hard temper, delivering elevated strength and fatigue resistance in thin material sections. With a composition of approximately 17% chromium and 7% nickel, this grade strikes a balance of hardness and toughness that makes it especially effective for precision shimming and high-stress applications. Compared to annealed stainless grades, 301 sheet material achieves its performance through cold working rather than chemical modification, allowing designers and fabricators to maximize strength without increasing thickness.

Key Properties & Why They Matter

The defining advantage of 301 stainless steel sheet lies in its mechanical performance. High tensile strength and yield strength enable the material to withstand repeated loading cycles without permanent deformation, which is ideal for fatigue-sensitive environments. Its toughness supports reliable performance in demanding industrial conditions, and its naturally bright surface finish makes it suitable for both functional and aesthetic applications.

While 301 stainless steel offers solid corrosion resistance in many environments, it’s slightly less resistant than 302 or 304 stainless steels. With this in mind, your material selection should always account for exposure conditions, especially in highly corrosive or chemically aggressive settings.

Where & How It’s Used

Thanks to its high fatigue life and dimensional stability, 301 full hard stainless shims are frequently used in aerospace instrumentation, machine frame assemblies, and other precision equipment where consistent spacing is crucial. The material also appears across decorative structural components and architectural metal accents, where its strength and finish support both performance and aesthetics.

In applications involving vibration, thermal cycling, or repeated motion, the fatigue resistance of 301 full hard sheet maintains long-term alignment and load distribution.

Selection & Available Sizes

Trinity Brand Industries supplies 301 full hard sheet in a range of thicknesses and sheet sizes to support diverse design requirements. For exact tolerances or nonstandard dimensions, we provide custom sizing options to help you achieve proper fit and performance without additional downstream processing.

Fabrication & Customization

Although full-hard material is inherently stronger, 301 stainless steel sheet remains well suited for precision fabrication when handled correctly. It performs solidly in shim applications, maintains a clean edge when laser or waterjet cut, and retains its bright finish for visible components. Trinity Brand Industries carefully handles custom fabrication requests for accurate results and minimized lead time.
