302/304 Full Hard Stainless Steel is an 18% chromium and 8% nickel austenitic alloy. The most familiar and used alloy in the stainless steel family. This represents an excellent combination of corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication because of some of the important properties, i.e. high strength with low weight, resistance to oxidation, ease of cleaning, the beauty of appearance, prevention of product contamination, good strength and toughness at cryogenic temperatures. Key Properties

Grade 302/304 stainless steel is a popular choice for shim stock for a number of reasons. In addition to its ease of fabrication, this alloy also offers strong corrosion resistance, aesthetic finishes, and good strength at cryogenic temperatures. The full-hard temper means shims cut from this metal provide less spring-back and higher stability, which means better performance.

Typical Applications

Shims made from this type of stainless steel sheet are used frequently in aerospace, medical device, food and beverage, and pressure vessel applications. For example, these shims are used often for finishing gaps in surgical equipment.

Selection and Available Gauges

We provide a wide range of thicknesses to support numerous clearance needs. Our inventory contains shim stock in gauges as thin as 0.001” as well as various widths and lengths. Contact a member of our team to discuss your needs and how we can help you meet them.
